Bob Hackworth on Latvala: 'She's a hypocrite'

October

latvaladuck.jpgAfter being hit with a duck-filled second mailing by Republican County Commissioner Susan Latvala that blasts him -- this time as a "Tax Quack" instead of being an Obama-phile -- Democrat Bob Hackworth blasted her treatment of the truth. Latvala's latest mailer suggests he'll raise a host of fees and credits her with lowering taxes, without mentioning her own support of higher fees and previously, tax rates.

"Her mailings, it’s just hard to believe she’s saying with a straight face. It’s beyond comprehension to make the statements she’s making," Hackworth said. "I feel like it’s a backhanded compliment when you think about it. … The fact is she’s a complete hypocrite. They’re dishonest."

While Hackworth in fact recommends looking at higher fees, he suggests they offset property taxes. Latvala has said she is open to a property tax rate increase, at times noting it would be needed after the county finishes heavy budget reductions. Hackworth also said Latvala distorted his actual policy statement on his campaign Web site.

"Going forward, if I’m elected, I’ll push for a better job of managing optimum efficiencies and identifying new revenue sources other than property tax receipts to fund essential general fund services. New revenue sources, that offset ad valorem taxes and that are more fair, equitable and stable, need to be urgently explored and considered. Examples that are working in other places are: special fire assessments, a tourist food and beverage tax, local-option gas tax, local business tax, payments-in-lieu-of taxes, stormwater fees, solid-waste franchise fees and others that are more equitable and stable."
