Builders group endorses Scott Strepina in Tampa City Council District 2
TAMPA -- The Florida Gulf Coast chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors on Monday endorsed Scott Strepina in the race for the citywide District 2 seat on the Tampa City Council.
The organization said it backs Strepina because it believes elected officials must be committed to creating a more business-friendly climate that will attract private sector jobs.
"Scott's been real involved, and we like his ideas,” said Steve P. Cona III, the chapter’s chief operating officer.
Strepina, who oversees business development efforts for the Print Concierge in Ybor City, is running against incumbent City Council member Mary Mulhern and Susan W. Long, a first-time candidate who got into the race Friday, the last day candidates could file and qualify for the ballot. Long teaches accounting, finance and statistics at South University and statistics at Argosy University. She said she got into the race in large part because the City Council isn’t doing enough to curb panhandling.
ABC is a private, not-for-profit national organization with 77 chapters representing 25,000 construction and construction-related firms with 2 million employees. Its Gulf Coast chapter covers from Gainesville to Naples and has an office in Tampa.
This is the first endorsement ABC has made in city races, but Cona said it plans to make more recommendations in both the mayoral and City Council races.
