Candidate Karl Nurse gets a little help from City Hall

ST. PETERSBURG -- First-time candidates such as Vel Thompson often have a hard time getting their name out.

Her rival, City Council member Karl Nurse, doesn't have that problem.

Not only does he appear on the city's television channel every week, but now City Hall is advertising a meet and greet he is hosting a week before the Nov. 3 election.

The event listing makes no mention of the election.

But when asked about the listing, the city's marketing department said they try to advertise other candidate events, as well. They also said Nurse didn't ask them to list the event. Rather, they caught wind of the event from the Craftsman House Gallery, where the event will be held, and posted it.

But Nurse is the only candidate who has an event listed this month, the busiest of the campaign season.

Here's the event listing as it reads on the city's Web site:

Oct. 24 - City Councilman Karl Nurse meet & greet.
Craftsman House Gallery. 2955 Central Ave. 7 to 9 p.m. Meet Karl Nurse in a casual setting.  Karl has been a big supporter of environmental issues, historic preservation, local, small businesses & mass transit.  You can ask him about his plans to continue his work on St. Petersburg's city council. or 727-323-ARTS (2787).

UPDATE: The listing has been removed.

"I have been posting candidate community forums on the city web calendar as I hear about them throughout the election process. I should of only posted community activities that has multiple candidates and not of listed an activity for a specific candidate," wrote Kim Tyre of the city's marketing staff in an e-mail. "This is my error. As of right now, the web calendar listing on Oct. 24th has been taken off the web calendar."
