Charlie Crist's Pinellas County campaign co-chairman John Morroni backs off
Pinellas County Commissioner John Morroni, a Republican and an honorary co-chairman of Charlie Crist's Senate campaign in Pinellas, said at lunchtime Thursday he will probably stay out of the Senate race once Crist runs as an independent.
"He's been my friend for 30 years and I wish him all the best, " said Morroni, a former Florida House member seeking re-election this fall to the commission. "I've never had to deal with somebody I've supported who has switched party in the middle of the primary."
Crist hasn't called him about his decision to run without a party affiliation, said Morroni, who backed Crist during the Pinellas GOP's straw poll in January that Marco Rubio overwhelming won in Crist's backyard. Crist also attended Morroni's annual public safety appreciation dinner in February.
Pressed to say specifically whether Crist could list Morroni as a supporter, Morroni replied, "I would probably stay out it."
