Charlotte Observer editorial: Tampa deserves to crow about its openness on RNC spending
A Charlotte Observer editorial Tuesday notes that Tampa officials have crowed about being more open than their Charlotte counterparts when it comes to spending a $50 million federal grant appropriated for convention security.
"And rightly so," the newspaper adds.
The editorial -- headlined "Tampa: We're proud we're not like Charlotte" -- goes on to review the difference in approaches between the two convention host cities: the Tampa City Council has openly discussed and publicly voted on proposed convention spending, while the Charlotte City Council delegated those decisions to the city manager more than a year ago. And the Observer approvingly quotes Mayor Bob Buckhorn saying that he and Police Chief Jane Castor are responsible for keeping residents informed on what the city is doing and why.
"Why is that too much for Charlotte citizens to ask?" the editorial concludes.
