Christopher Mitchell wants to replace Pat Kemp as head of Hillsborough Democrats

Pat Kemp, elected to lead the Hillsborough County Dems two years ago, won't be seeking re-election this year and vice chair Christopher Mitchell is seeking to take her place. Speaking last night to the GLBTA Democratic caucus, Mitchell said if elected "the DEC is going to look completely different," promising a complete restructuring. Mitchell was chosen as vice chair in after Chris Brown left in July to go to law school at UC Berkeley.  He was briefly a candidate in the District 47 state House race, but withdrew in March. He then went on to sue District 47 Republican candidate James Grant, alleging irregularities with Grant's state-required  financial disclosure forms. A judge threw out the case. Grant easily defeated Democrat Michael Steinberg on Nov. 2. Hillsborough Democrats have historically struggled to maintain unity.  Kemp's tenure has been marked by tension with some black members. And in January, she raised eyebrows when she temporarily stepped down from her leadership post to unsuccessfully challenge fellow Democrat Janet Cruz in the Democratic primary in a special election for the District 58 state House seat.
