Clearwater mayor calls for Pinellas County transit tax referendum
Hillsborough County commissioners earlier this month voted unanimously to write a referendum on a rail and transit tax that could appear on the 2010 ballot. Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard wants Pinellas County to do the same.
“We’re going to have to get the County Commission on board,” said Hibbard, who is also vice chairman of the Tampa Bay Area Transportation Authority.
Hibbard said it makes sense to vote on the tax in both counties at the same time. Both systems would be part of a larger regional rail and express bus network that would run from Citrus County to Sarasota County with Hillsborough and Pinellas county as its nucleus.
“The information that’s going to be presented to Hillsborough is similar for Pinellas,” he said. “Why not do it in one fell swoop?”
Conveniently, a group in Pinellas County that includes Commissioner Ken Welch is working on a transit tax proposal. Read about it here.
TBARTA will release its master plan for the region tomorrow.
