Community activist wants to oust Nurse
ST. PETERSBURG -- Longtime gadfly Theresa "Momma Tee" Lassiter will challenge council member Karl Nurse for the District 6 seat in 2009.
Lassiter was among many critics who opposed Nurse's appointment to the council in April, partly because he is the first white person to represent the predominately black district in nearly 30 years. The seat was vacated by insurance agent Earnest Williams.
Lassiter, 53, announced her intent to run during today's council meeting as she lashed out at several council members for various actions.
She told council members Leslie Curran and Jamie Bennett to stop whispering about council member Wengay Newton during council meetings. Curran denied the allegation.
Lassiter told Nurse he should be focusing on social issues such as a child care rather than his plan to replace city grass that is not being used for recreational activities with native plants.
She told Bennett he should listen to former council member Kathleen Ford's call for a financial audit of all city investments.
"Oh heavens, yes, I'm running," she concluded. "I've had enough."
