Council put brakes on Jamie Bennett's waterfront referendum

ST. PETERSBURG-- The CIty Council put the brakes Thursday on council member Jamie Bennett's efforts to let residents vote on additional protections for the downtown waterfront.

Bennett, who is running for mayor, borrowed the measure from Protect Our Wallets and Waterfront — or POWW — the citizens group that originally opposed the Tampa Bay Rays' plan to build a new stadium at Al Lang Field.

Bennett is not supporting POWW's other proposed referendum, which would give voters a say on public funding for professional sports teams.

Mayoral hopeful Kathleen Ford helped draft the language of both petition items.

Council member Herb Polson said he suggested the council table Bennett's proposed referendum because there was so much confusion about the unintended consequences of giving voters the final say on any changes to the waterfront parks system.
