County Commissioner Mark Sharpe has primary opponent

The last minute qualifying of Josh Burgin in the District 7 Hillsborough County Commission race means sitting commissioner Mark Sharpe has a primary opponent. Burgin, who worked as the legislative aide for former Hillsborough County Commissioner Brian Blair, is the brother of state Rep. Rachel Burgin. Josh Burgin has also worked as executive director of the Hillsborough County Republican Party.

Sharpe, who has broken from party ranks by strongly supporting a proposed sales tax to pay for road improvements, expanded bus service and rail, said he welcomes the challenge.

"I love my job. And I love serving the people, but I never, ever take it for granted," he said. "I'm going to continue to talk about, the six years that I've served and the good that I've done."

And he said he'll continue to support the sales tax and encourage debate about that approach to improving the county's infrastructure and creating jobs.
