Crist challenger was his appointee to citizen board
There's an old trick in politics: If you perceive someone as posing a threat, hire them, appoint them to something or otherwise hold them close enough to keep them from lobbing hand grenades your way.
Tampa Tea Party co-founder Sharon Calvert's name had been circulating for months as a potential challenger to Hillsborough County Commissioner Victor Crist, a fellow Republican. So it seemed odd, then, when Crist appointed her to the commission's Citizens Advisory Committee in January. Or was it?
The panel gives commissioners advice on bigger ticket policy decisions. Crist said he saw Calvert simply as a smart person who wanted to get involved, so he obliged her. Yada, Yada.
Didn't work, as became clear a little more than a week ago when Calvert made her aspirations official by filing to run against Crist. He says she offered to resign from the volunteer committee but he told her there was no need.
