Cruz, Redner debate ways to balance budget
District 58 state House candidates Joe Redner, who is running with no party affiliation, and Democrat Janet Cruz, faced off at a candidate forum in Tampa's Wellswood neighborhood on Monday night. Redner said to balance the budget he would raise taxes on the wealthy and cut all government employees' pay by 10 percent -- except for teachers. “We’re going to have to make some cuts,” Redner said. “Republicans don’t want to raise taxes. Democrats don’t want to cut. We’re going to have to do both.” Cruz, who won the seat in a special election in February, said she would close loopholes and impose taxes on Internet sales. And Redner brought up an issue that became a point of contention for Cruz during the special election, asking her if she actually lives in the district. Cruz said she does. She said she has moved into a condo in the area and her husband lives in his own house outside the district.
