Dem chief: GOP should force Pasco clerk to quit

Pasco County Democratic Party Chairwoman Alison Morano urged Republican leaders to force retiring Clerk of Circuit Court Jed Pittman to resign today. In a news release, Morano assailed the Republican Pittman's "double dipping" -- taking retirement and regular pay at the same time -- and less than stellar attendance blamed on his illness.

Pittman has defended his approach. Morano said top Pasco GOP officials, including state Sen. Mike Fasano, should demand Pittman's ouster "for his outrageous conduct." Download pasco_clerk_release.pdf

Responded Fasano: It's Jed's decision, and the Democratic Party ought to look at its own leaders.

"I worked diligently this session to stop double dipping and it was people like Sen. Al Lawson, the minority leader, who fought to stop me," Fasano said.

With Pittman leaving anyway, deputy clerk Paula O'Neil is among Republicans running to replace him. Morano, who misspelled O'Neil's name in the letter, said electing O'Neil "would be, in true Republican spirit, more of the same."
