Democrat Hillsborough commissioner gets some love from the governor
Democrat Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner got a rare, across-the-aisle shout-out from the governor at the Florida State Fair Thursday. Gov. Rick Scott, a tea party leaning Republican, was in town for the annual Governor's Day Luncheon at the fair. During his address, he touted state Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater's campaign to go after auto insurance fraud, blamed on raising rates for motorists. Scott singled out a similar campaign by Beckner in Hillsborough County. It targets fraud by going after clinics that appear to cater to people who stage accidents in order to collect up to $10,000 in personal injury protection coverage. The licensure ordinance is being credited by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's office and an insurance industry group for the shuttering of dozens of questionable clinics and a sharp decline in so-called PIP claims that appear suspicious. The ordinance is being challenged in court by some clinics who say it is wrongly ensnaring legitimate businesses. But Scott nevertheless had high praise. "I want to congratulate Commissioner Kevin Beckner. Here's an example that, if you do the right thing, something happens."
