February

Democrat Janet Cruz won an easy victory in a special election for the District 58 state House seat today. Among those at her victory party: Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner; potential Tampa mayor candidate Bob Buckhorn; former state Sen. Les Miller, a candidate for the county commission: Tampa City Council members Gwen Miller and Charlie Miranda, and state Rep. Ron Saunders from Key West, the incoming House minority leader. Saunders said the party has high hopes for flipping some Hillsborough House seats to Democrats in the November elections. One of the most promising races, he said, is in District 57, where Stacy Frank, the daughter of Hillsborogh Clerk of Circuit Court Pat Frank. "Stacy Frank is a star," said Saunders, noting that her fundraising ability and the large number of registered Democrats in the district put her race in the party's top 10 watch-list this year.
