Democrats get a head start in mayoral race
ST. PETERSBURG -- For local Democrats, it is apparently never too late to grab onto President-elect Barack Obama's coattails.
The St. Petersburg Democratic Club has invited all Democratic mayoral candidates to its January meeting in an effort to build on the success of the Obama campaign. City elections are nonpartisan, but a number of local Democratic leaders are turning to party politics to rally support.
Democrats Scott Wagman, Paul Congemi and Jamie Bennett are expected to run for the job held by Republican Mayor Rick Baker.
The meeting takes place at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 7 at Piccadilly Cafeteria, 1900 34th St. N, St. Petersburg.
"This will give the serious candidates an opportunity to test their strength before a very diverse cross-section of the Democratic community," president Jim Donelon said in a statement announcing the meeting.
