District 57 state House race draws big money and attention
The District 57 state House race pitting Republican Dana Young against Democrat Stacy Frank is one of the state's most closely watched legislative races. Republicans hope to hold onto the seat that's open because Faye Culp is term-limited out of the job. Democrats see it as an opportunity to less the Republican hold on the legislature. It's a district with nearly an equal number of Republican and Democratic voters. Fundraising figures underscore the significance of the contest. Frank and Young have raised nearly $450,000 each, more than almost any other state House candidate. (Side note: Republican heavyweights Will Weatherford and Dean Cannon have collected more than $800,000 each for their races even though they face little competition.) The attacks have gotten ugly, with Young's camp capitalizing on the wrath of parents who object to Frank's work negotiating cell phone tower leases on school properites, and Frank's supporters casting Young as a Republican mouthpiece.
