Early voting lighter so far than 2010 in Hillsborough



Voters in Hillsborough County are submitting early ballots at a slower clip than they did two years ago, but at a faster rate than they did in 2008, the last presidential election year.

Through Saturday, the first week of early voting, 8,229 Hillsborough County residents have submitted ballots at 15 early voting sites. There were 9,548 early voters through the first week in 2010, 5,045 in 2008.There were 13 early voting sites in 2008, 14 in 2010.

In all, 10,327 voters cast ballots during early voting in 2008, 24,160 in 2010.

The Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library in the Carrollwood area is the top voting location this year thus far, with 1,083 ballots cast there. It usually is a popular location for early voting. Bloomingdale Regional Public Library in eastern Hillsborough is a close second with 1,073 ballots submitted through Saturday. Jan Kaminis Platt Regional Library in South Tampa, normally an early voting hot spot, was lagging in third with 913 ballots cast.

The three libraries are usually the top early voting sites.

Update: Monday brought an uptick in early voting. A total of 1,635 people submitted ballots, the highest total of any day so far.
