Ed Turanchik to enter Tampa mayor's race

7

October

As expected, Ed Turanchik says he plans to officially enter the Tampa mayor's race after the November election. City elections are in March 2011. Turanchik is a West Tampa developer and former Hillsborough County commissioner. He's also a long time rail advocate, leading the charge for light rail in Hillsborough County nearly 20 years ago. Now, he's handling community outreach for the high speed rail project connecting Tampa to Orlando. Turanchik also tried to bring the 2012 Olympics to Tampa, and was a key player in the original -- but failed -- plan to redevelop the Central Park public housing complex downtown. He touted his experience with the Olympics, as a developer and a proponent of mass transit in a prepared statement, saying "I know what it takes to succeed."

The mayor's race is already crowded, with former City Council member Bob Buckhorn, council chairman Tom Scott, county commissioner Rose Ferlita, former police captain Marion Lewis and businesmman Arthur Richardson are already in. Other potential candidates include former Mayor Dick Greco and former Congressman Jim Davis. In a letter announcing his intentions, Turanchik predicts that the race will "scramble the calculations of the most seasoned political odds-makers."  Read more about it here.
