The Florida Elections Commission is investigating a complaint filed against District 56 state House candidate Rachel Burgin that she violated state elections law by accepting two $500 campaign contributions from Miami-based Dosal Tobacco Corporation. State law imposes a $500 limit on campaign contributions. A letter sent last week to Burgin from the commission says that a review showed the complaint contained "one or more legally sufficient allegations." State records show Burgin received donations of $500 each in August 2009 and July 2010. Burgin said she is looking into the issue.

In 2009, Burgin voted against the $1 per pack cigarette tax. She said she generally opposes taxes, but might have supported that one if all the revenue from the tax was directed to health care. At a candidate forum leading up to the primary election, Burgin also said she doesn't believe in any tax that capitalizes on a person's addictions.

Burgin will face Democrat David Chalela in the November.
