Elections officials will finalize District 58 primary vote today
Elections officials will finalize the votes in the District 58 state House primary race today. It was a close one, with Republican Hunter Chamberlin topping his opponent by 12 votes and Democrat Janet Cruz beating her closest challenger, Pat Kemp, by 58 votes. Kemp, who chairs the Hillsborough County Democratic Party, waited to concede the race until she learned only 23 provisional ballots had been cast in the Democratic primary, meaning she had no chance of winning.
Cruz is at the University of Tampa today, where President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will announce that Florida has received $1.25 billion in federal stimulus money for high-speed rail. Cruz received a call from a White House political outreach staffer Tuesday night congratulating her on her win in the District 58 primary. "Then they called yesterday and asked if I would like to come here. So here I am. I'm excited," she said. Cruz supported Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary, but then got behind Obama in the race against John McCain.
