EMS talks: We say negotiation, you say information

No wonder there's a lawsuit looming over proposed changes to Pinellas County's emergency medical services system. It seems the county and St. Petersburg, which stands to lose about 58 percent of its EMS budget if a proposal by Pinellas County Administrator Bob LaSala goes into effect, can't even agree on the basics.

The basics -- like why the St. Petersburg City Council and the Pinellas County Commission held a joint session on Halloween. Or why St. Petersburg council Chairman Jim Kennedy met with county officials earlier this week.

The St. Petersburg side seemed to think the meetings were about negotiating - trying to find a middle ground that both sides could live with.

The county thought otherwise.

"There were no negotiations," LaSala said. "The meeting on the 31st was not a negotiation. It was never crafted to be a negotiating session. It was an informational session."
