Firefighters back Hackworth in Pinellas commission bid



Democrat Bob Hackworth has lined up the endorsement of Florida and Clearwater firefighters unions in his bid to oust Republican County Commissioner Susan Latvala from the north Pinellas District 4 seat.

From his news release Monday announcing the support:

Bob Hackworth has received the endorsement for his candidacy for Pinellas County Commission Seat 4 from the Florida Professional Firefighters.  Gary Rainey, President and CEO of the Florida Professional Firefighters, endorsed Bob Hackworth September 16, 2010 in a written statement.  Mr. Rainey states in the endorsement on behalf of the organization, “we believe that you will honorably serve the citizens of Pinellas County, and the interests of the men and women employed in the Fire and Emergency Medical Services, who have made the protection of life and property their life’s work”. 

In Pinellas and Pasco Counties, there are 1,482 Firefighters and Emergency Medical Services Personnel who belong to the Florida Professional Firefighters in the 2nd District.  Statewide, the Florida Professional Firefighters represents 24,000 Firefighters and Emergency Medical Services Personnel in 175 cities, counties and special districts.

The Pinellas County Council of Fire Fighters, Inc., represents Clearwater, Safety Harbor, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs, St. Petersburg, Largo, Pinellas Park, St. Pete Beach, Seminole and Indian Rocks Beach.  Included are East Lake, Oldsmar, Belleair Bluffs, New Port Richey, Maderia Beach, Treasure Island, and Gulfport.

In addition, in a separate letter, the Clearwater Fire Fighters Association Local 1158, Inc. endorsed Bob Hackworth’s candidacy.  Gerard DeVivo, President of the Clearwater Firefighters Association Local 1158, Inc., affiliated with the International Association of Firefighters, states in the written endorsement  that “the qualifications, experience and expertise you have are clearly superior in this campaign and the citizens of Pinellas County are truly served by having a candidate with your vision and integrity serving in government”.
