FOP backs Bill Foster in St. Petersburg mayoral race
ST. PETERSBURG-- The Pinellas County Fraternal Order of Police has endorsed mayoral hopeful Bill Foster.
"We feel his philosophy can best meet the police officers' and police unions' needs," said Karl Lounge, vice president of the union, which represents sergeants and lieutenants. "We didn't speak to him. Ours was a strictly research endorsement."
Lounge said the field of candidates is impressive, but Foster stood out because he said he would loosen the city's chase policy so police cruisers can pursue suspects in nonviolent crimes.
Foster, a former city council member, now has two police union endorsements. The other is from the Sun Coast Police Benevolent Association, which represents rank and file officers.
