"The General" of Hillsborough County government announces he will retire
Hillsborough County Commissioners deferentially call him "the general" because, indeed, Utilities Director Paul Vanderploog came to the county after 33 years with the U.S. Army, from which he had retired as a major general. Now Vanderploog is leaving the county after 14 years, having reformed the county's water and waste-water utilities and overseeing their merger with solid waste operations, earning a broad-based level of respect along the way. He retires May 25. "I did the best I could for the time I was here," said Vanderploog, 71. "It’s time for me to move on with the rest of my life."
