Gershom Faulkner political brochure touts Times endorsement -- from 2007
ST. PETERSBURG -- In his race for City Council, Gershom Faulkner is distributing a brochure that touts his endorsements from various groups and organizations.
So his opponent, council member Wengay Newton, was perplexed when he saw the St. Petersburg Times included on the piece. Under the Times logo are what appears to be words ripped from the newspaper: "The difference in the two candidates comes down to who has the better experience and temperament for the job."
Sure enough, those very words did come from the Times -- in 2007 when the paper endorsed Faulkner over Newton. But this year, in a round two matchup between the two, the Times editorial board switched its endorsement to Newton.
Yet the political brochure doesn't make clear that the Times editorial board is not endorsing Faulkner this time around. Indeed, it implies just the opposite.
"It's really misleading," Newton said.
Faulkner said he doesn't think the brochure implies the Times was endorsing him. He did say, however, that the printer couldn't include the full quote and the date of the article.
"I called the printer, and he said he couldn't get the full quote on there," Faulkner said. "But when I read it, it doesn't give a name. Some people might get that impression, but that's not the intent for us to mislead anybody."
