Gloria Steinem to attend rally in St. Petersburg



Activist and writer Gloria Steinem is coming to St. Petersburg next weekend for a get-out-the-vote rally at the Jannus Live venue downtown.

Part of the “I Am Choice” campaign, the event on Oct. 20 is intended to encourage people to vote all the way down the lengthy two-page ballot and reject all 11 state constitutional amendments, while approving the retention of the three Supreme Court Justices and the county’s Teacher’s Referendum. The campaign is especially focusing on urging people to vote no on Amendment 6, which would ban public funds from going to abortion services or health coverage that includes abortions.

According to the press release, Steinem will be joined by Democratic local elected officials as well as candidates, such as Jessica Ehrlich, who is running for Congress against Rep. Bill Young, Dwight Dudley, who is running for Florida House District 68 and Mary Lou Ambrose, who is running for State House District 66.

(St. Petersburg, FL)-- Renowned activist and author Gloria Steinem will headline the I Am Choice, “GOTV UnPlugged: Rally Our Way Forward” on Saturday, October 20th at Jannus Live, 200 1st Avenue North in downtown St. Petersburg from noon-3pm. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.



I Am Choice invites the Tampa Bay community to this family-fun event featuring live music, prominent speakers and candidates including Jessica
Ehrlich (Congressional Candidate D-13), Rick Kriseman (FL House Rep);and Congresswoman Kathy Castor.



Gloria Steinem is a writer, lecturer and feminist activist who travels in this and other countries as an advocate for equality. Gloria first came to
Florida in 1972 as a co-founder of the National Women's Political Caucus, and has been working to put the concerns of the female half of the
country on the political map ever since. She is currently at work on Road to the Heart: America As if Everyone Mattered, a book about her more than thirty years on the road as a feminist organizer.



Other confirmed speakers include: Shawna Vercher (President of My America); Rev Dr. Manuel L. Sykes (President of NAACP-St Pete; Reverend,
Bethel Community Baptist Church); Mary Lou Ambrose (Candidate, FL State House District 66); Dwight Dudley (Candidate, FL State House District 68); Laila Abdelaziz ( Regional Director for Emerge USA); Steve Kornell (St Petersburg City Council Member, District 5); Ayele B. Hunt (Executive Director, I Am Choice), and more.



"This Get Out The Vote (GOTV) rally celebrates our ability to use our voice and our vote in the upcoming election to make decisive change and move our community and country forward. The event will also focus on the importance of voting “down the ballot”, specifically informing voters about several local, state and federal candidates, voting NO on all 11 Amendments, Yes to retention of the three Supreme Court Justices, and Yes on the Teacher’s Referendum in Pinellas County”, explained Ayele Hunt, Executive Director of I AM Choice.



I Am Choice is a political campaign focused on getting out to vote, down the ballot voting, and defeating Amendment 6. Amendment 6 is the Florida legislature’s constitutional initiative to rollback women’s rights and privacy, while jumpstarting the process to end abortion access in Florida.

As a part of the campaign, IAC stands up and advocates for an individual’s right to make choices in all areas of his or her personal life as an
intrinsic part of our right to control our own lives, and promotes gender, marriage, and human equality.
