Grand Bohemian hotel project in St. Petersburg delayed again
ST. PETERSBURG - The long-awaited Grand Bohemian hotel project slated for downtown has been delayed for the fifth time.
The City Council approved a development agreement today that allows Kessler Enterprise to put off its proposed development of a vacant downtown lot until 2012.
The hotel project has been pending since 2004. This is the fifth time city officials have allowed Kessler to change its plans.
City officials said they were swayed partly by the developer's quick response to concerns that the vacant lot at Second Street and First Avenue N was unattractive.
After council members complained about the unruly lot last week, Kessler hired workers to plant shrubbery and oak and palm trees along the borders of the lot this week. Kessler also removed several torn signs advertising the proposed hotel and repaired a fence around the lot.
"This is how it needs to be done," said council member Jamie Bennett.
