Gualtieri lags behind Rice in fundraising

Chief Deputy Bob Gualtieri may have gotten Governor Rick Scott’s nod to replace Pinellas County Sheriff Jim Coats in an interim capacity when he resigns next month, but his most serious competitor is racking up more funds.

Former Sheriff Everett Rice raised $93,810 in the third quarter of 2011 while Gualtieri brought in $33,287, according to recently filed financial reports. That brings their campaign fundraising totals for the year to $165,340 and $103,747, respectively, for the Republican candidates.

On Friday, Scott announced he had chosen Gualtieri to serve out the rest of Coats' term, which ends in January 2013.
