Guido Maniscalco campaign message lights up Tampa nightclub
Call it a new millenium campaign strategy or late night fun: Text messages promoting the City Council candidacy of Guido Maniscalco ticked across a video screen at the Aja nightclub in Channelside on Saturday night. Among the pronouncements: "Guido Maniscalco is the future." Maniscalco, 26, is running for the at-large District 1 council seat. He said the text messages were courtesy of friends he was hanging out with Saturday night in a VIP suite at Aja.
"I don't think there were many voters in that venue. It's all young people," he said. He figures the people in the club thought the Guido message was a Jersey Shore joke. "They've been hearing the name Guido for a year and half now on that show," he said. Maniscalco, who works for his family's jewelry stores, is running against former state Rep. Sara Romeo and current council member Curtis Stokes for the District 1 seat. If Romeo wins the race in March, she'll have to address a possible conflict-of-interest issue. She heads a nonprofit that has a $3.7 million housing contract with the city. The city's ethics code doesn't allow elected officials to have city contracts. Read more about it here.
