Hernando clerk now unopposed in re-election

Nicolai BROOKSVILLE -- Clerk of Court Karen Nicolai (left) nearly secured re-election this week when challenger Harlan Derek Saltsman withdrew from the race.

Saltsman, a Democrat from Ridge Manor, cited the need to be with his family as his young son battles an aggressive form of cancer. In a statement released Wednesday, he wrote that he was choosing to spend time caring for his family rather than engage in a campaign to unseat the Republican incumbent. There are no other declared candidates in the race. The qualifying period for local races ends Friday.

The departure leaves Nicolai sitting on a bank of more than $30,000 -- money, in part, collected through a fund-raiser with Gov. Charlie Crist. So any bets who Nicolai might dole it out to? Interested money-starved candidates need apply.
