Hillsborough commissioners vote to oppose health care reform
Hillsborough County commissioners on Wednesday voted to send a letter of support for Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum as he pursues a lawsuit to kill federal health care reform legislation.
"From my perception, this is a socialism bill," said Commissioner Jim Norman, who suggested having the board send McCollum a letter of support.
The board voted 4-2, with commissioners Kevin Beckner and Kevin White voting against sending the letter. The two are the only Democrats on the commission. Commissioner Rose Ferlita was not at the meeting.
Norman made his proposal after White requested a presentation on how health care reform may affect the county's indigent health care program.
Beckner said the legal experts he has heard give McCollum's lawsuit little likelihood of success.
"To me, it appears a great deal of political theater is being orchestrated in an election year," Beckner said.
