Hillsborough County Commission welcomes new Tampa mayor
Former Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio avoided interacting with the Hillsborough County Commission as much as she reasonably could. Sure, she had relationships with individual board members, but the board collectively had a way of antagonizing her.
Hoping to lessen the divide, Chairman Al Higginbotham invited new Mayor Bob Buckhorn to Wednesday's Commission meeting to welcome him into his new job. Joking during a photo session during which Buchorn stood before them and the dais, Higginbotham said, "You can see we're behind you."
Buckhorn spoke of their coming relationship as a partnership, a word he used often on the campaign trail.
"The fact that you reached your hands across a block to us means a lot to me," Buckhorn said.
He said he looked forward to working with commissioners to "make this place, once again, the city in America that everybody talks about. And he pledged that "the days of parochial and partisan differences are behind us."
He also observed at some point that a mayor is most popular when first elected to office. So we'll see how long the warmth lasts.
