Hillsborough County Commissioners sworn in
A standing-room only crowd gathered at Hillsborough County Center to welcome three new commissioners and two returning ones Tuesday morning.
Each of the newcomers are former state legislators: Republicans Victor Crist and Sandra Murman, and Democrat Les Miller. They were joined in taking the oath of office by returning commissioners Mark Sharpe and Ken Hagan, both Republicans. Hagan is taking over an at-large seat after serving in District 2 representing northern Hillsborough since 2002.
They thanked their friends, supporters and family members. Murman and Miller both in some fashion borrowed the campaign slogan of Governor-elect Rick Scott in saying the commission would need to "get to work" given the many challenges caused by the economy.
Hagan, known normally as a man of few words, gave the longest address, closing with thanks to his father, known for tirelessly working on his son's behalf during campaign season.
"This is the longest I've ever heard Ken speak," Sharpe said.
Commissioners have recessed for a reception and will reconvene at 11 a.m. to pick their leadership and make committee assignments.
