The lead advocate for creating an elected Hillsborough County mayor has previously emphasized that the position would be nonpartisan - above the political fray in a sense.

But preliminary ballot language would make the job partisan after all.

 Mary Ann Stiles, a lawyer who has headed the initiative, said she is heeding the will of some other supporters, particularly her fellow Republicans. They say they want campaigns for the office to include the full and open debate of political ideologies that only a partisan race can offer.
