Housing Authority chair endorses Steve Kornell

ST. PETERSBURG-- Arnett Smith, chairman of the St. Petersburg Housing Authority, has endorsed Steve Kornell in the District 5 City Council race.

Smith said Kornell helped him become a state committeeman for the Democratic Party and he promised months ago to return the favor. Kornell would make an excellent council member, Smith said.

But the endorsement should not reflect poorly on Kornell's rival, Angela Rouson, Smith said. Rouson was Smith's longtime counterpart on the Pinellas County Housing Authority.

"She's a very worthy candidate," he said. "She was just late getting into the race."

Rouson and Kornell face Joe Smith in the September primary.

Here is the campaign's press release (the campaign also snuck in some words about Kornell being endorsed by the National Association of Social Workers's Florida chapter earlier this year.):

St. Petersburg – Steve Kornell, candidate for St. Petersburg City Council, announced today that he has received several significant endorsements in the District 5 city council race, including the coveted recommendation of The St. Petersburg Times.

In their recommendation of Kornell, The editorial board of The St. Petersburg Times wrote, “Kornell stands above the rest for his thoughtful and well-researched positions on issues facing the city.”

Kornell also picked up the endorsement of the National Association of Social Workers –Florida Chapter.

“We have made this endorsement based on your understanding and support of important social service and social welfare issues,” said Jim Akin, Executive Director of the NASW - Florida Chapter.

Kornell also picked up a notable endorsement from Dr. Arnett Smith, Jr., a prominent District 5 resident and former State Committeeman for the PCDEC. "I am supporting Steve Kornell because he has a genuine commitment to the welfare of our community," said Smith. "Steve understands the needs of our families and his experience has prepared him to represent us well on the City Council."
