Ken Welch's endorsement

ST. PETERSBURG -- County Commissioner Ken Welch says he hasn't decided whether he'll endorse in the St. Pete mayor's race, but he has a meeting scheduled for later this week with Kathleen Ford. How bout Foster? "He hasn't asked,'' said Welch, who doesn't seem to be taking too seriously those criticicizing Ford's temperment as too combative.

"Kathleen has exhibited some rough edges when she was a council peson, but on the other hand Kathleen is very bright. Swinging elbows is part of politics, and as a father of two daughters I don't want them to be judged any differently than men. Rick Baker could swing some strong elbows, too," he said.

On African-American leaders who overwhelmingly opposed Ford eight years ago, Welch said, "I don't think they ought to write Kathleen off. They ought to sit down and listen to her and hear what she has to say."
