Kriseman: Where's Mayor Baker on Raytheon?
ST. PETERSBURG-- State Rep. Rick Kriseman is urging Mayor Rick Baker to take a more visible role in addressing the toxic plume around Raytheon.
Kriseman, D-St. Petersburg, said he decided to reach out to Baker after he heard some residents complain about the mayor's silence regarding the contamination. Baker has not attended any public meetings on the issue and, as far as Bay Buzz can tell, has not publicly discussed the toxins.
At a recent community meeting, "there were several people who got up and said 'Where is Mayor Baker?, How come Mayor Baker is not here?'," Kriseman said. "Folks in the neighborhood are wanting to know where he is and what involvement, if any, he has had on the issue."
Kriseman commended Baker for directing his staff to attend the community meetings and for reaching out to state officials on the issue. But Baker could do more, he said.
"If it was me, I would probably go to at least one or two of the meetings. ... You are the face of the city, you are the top elected official, and I think the community wants to see him there."
Baker, who is on vacation, could not be reached for comment.
