Former state Sen. Jack Latvala says he plans to retire after 36 years in politics. After some health problems and years of political stress, the 56-year-old Pinellas-based consultant tells Bay Buzz he wants to spend next summer in Maine and more time at his Steinhatchee home.

Latvala Elected to the Senate in 1994, he quickly gained a high-profile role in state politics, serving as Senate majority leader from 1998 to 2000. He left office in 2002 because of term limits.

Latvala said he has taken no clients for future races. But he intends to keep his printing company. And evoking his inner Brett Favre, he didn't totally rule out a return.

"You may see me back. But it won't be during 2009," Latvala said.
