Les Miller hits Kevin White hard in pair of new mail pieces
Who knew Lesley "Les" Miller had it in him?
Maybe it was the ads that incumbent District 3 Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin White has placed in the Florida Sentinel Bulletin questioning Miller's work on behalf of minorities while with the Tampa-Hillsborough Urban League and Tampa General Hospital. But Miller, a former state legislator challenging White in the Democrat primary, struck back hard Friday.
He delivered a pair of mail pieces, each with the same black and white photo of White with a red magic marker "x" over his face. "Enough is Enough!" they declare. "Enough corruption! Enough sexual harassment! Enough Lies."
One is strictly an attack piece, with allusions to a federal jury finding White sexually harassed a former aide, to the $450,000 legal bill in the case paid by taxpayers and to his masked purchase of designer suits using campaign money in a past political contest. The other hits the same themes on one side, while showing a color photo of Miller on the other asking voters to support him because "our community deserves better."
Both Miller and third primary contestant Valerie Goddard have until now declined to draw attention to White's trouble while in office, including last year's federal court sexual harassment verdict, in anything but vague terms. Each has said things like they want to restore integrity to the office.
It would be interesting to see how Miller targeted who received his mailers. While such pieces can serve as a reminder of White's troubles to people who pay casual attention to the County Commission -- Oh, that Kevin White -- they can turn off others. But nobody will say Miller held back.
District 3 covers much of central and east Tampa as well as part of eastern Hillsborough County. The primary is Tuesday.
