Linda Saul-Sena goes on the attack

Democrat Linda Saul-Sena, who's challenging incumbent Republican Ken Hagan for the District 5 Hillsborough County Commission seat, is on the attack with a television commercial criticizing Hagan for his committee meeting attendance record. It aired last night during Jon Stewart's Daily Show, which featured President Barack Obama as a guest. One odd thing about the commercial: It says that when Hagan does show up for meetings, he votes in favor of special interests and developers, and shows a picture of the Mons Venus strip club, owned by Joe Redner. Saul-Sena said the photo is merely meant to demonstrate sprawl and an "unattractive roadway" and to underscore Hagan's lack of commitment to the proposed county transportation tax. "That wasn't on purpose," she said. It's an unusual choice, though, given that Hagan has cast multiple votes to increase regulations on adult businesses, and Saul-Sena endorsed Redner when he ran against Tampa City Council member Gwen Miller in 2007.  As for the claims that he misses meetings, Hagan pointed out he has missed only one County Commission meeting in eight years, though he acknowledged family committments kept him from some other board meetings. "I put my attendance record up against any elected official in Hillsborough County," Hagan said, adding that Saul-Sena missed multiple meetings this year during a trip to Europe. "This is just another act of desperation from a career politican who's losing in the polls."
