Mary Mulhern squashes Tampa City Council's Cuba discussion
Tampa City Council member Mary Mulhern stomped all over a suggestion by fellow board member Linda Saul-Sena that the council hold a special discussion meeting in September on expanding the city's trade with Cuba. Saul-Sena made the proposal at a council meeting Thursday, less than 24 hours after Mulhern returned from a visit to the island. The group she traveled with included developer Carl Lindell, a member of the Tampa Port Authority board.
Mulhern said that after she had time to digest the experience she would be happy to report on it, but it would be useless for the council to try to bring together people from other agencies and the business community and predicted there would be little participation. "We don't have a policy place in this," Mulhern said.
It certainly appeared Mulhern felt that Saul-Sena was trying to steal her thunder, something Mulhern essentially confirmed in an interview after the meeting. "Since I just got back from there it's something I should schedule at some point," she said. Oh, snap!
