Mayor Iorio to become Professor Pam

Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio will have a new title come spring: professor. She will teach an honors class on mass transit at the University of South Florida.

According to the course description, Professor Pam will explore Hillsborough County’s light rail initiative, including a likely 2010 referendum on a 1-cent sales tax to pay for rail, expanded bus service and roads: "It will allow students to see how plans for better transportation in Hillsborough County are evolving, how different agencies, partners and interest groups are involved in the effort, and how the voters can best be educated about their vote and the plan it would put in motion."

The position comes with a $2,300 salary, but Iorio said she will not accept the money. "Teaching this class is an extension of my public service and I am happy to do it at no cost to the university," she wrote in a letter to USF accepting the appointment.
