Mayor, sheriff take stage on homeless shelter
With today's opening of the new Pinellas Safe Harbor shelter for homeless people, St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster and Sheriff Jim Coats took prime roles.
But Foster gave a lot of credit during Wednesday's press event to another person: Pinellas-Pasco Chief Judge Thomas McGrady.
City, county and justice officials met for months on the issues, and not everybody agreed on the direction. But McGrady helped structure and push the meetings to deal with the problems, said Foster, noting McGrady had worked in downtown St. Petersburg and saw the effects on the criminal system.
"He, with his influence, really brought all these parties together," Foster said.
