Meek drops by NAACP forum in Temple Terrace

The crowd had dwindled to a few dozen people. His opponent was a no-show. But that didn't stop Democratic Senate hopeful Kendrick Meek from putting in a stretch-run appearance at a forum late Thursday in Temple Terrace sponsored by the NAACP and others.

He faced audience questions, including one asking him to defend himself against the barrage of mailers from primary opponent Jeff Greene accusing him of too-cozy ties to accused crook David Stackhouse. Stackhouse is accused of stealing about $1 million in private and public loans for a Miami development project. Meek sought federal money for Stackhouse, saying he didn't know of his problems or that he had hired his mom as a consultant.

"The real issue is that Mr. Greene has no real record to stand on," Meek said.

Though the appearance was somewhat of a get for the local-yokel forum, and Greene wasn't there, that didn't stop the moderator from docking Meek 10 seconds on his one-minute closing statement for overrunning his time on the last question.
