Mike Bilirakis for senator?

Nine local Republican leaders have a suggestion for Gov. Charlie Crist: Pick former Congressman Mike Bilirakis to fill the U.S. Senate seat abandoned by Mel Martinez.

In a letter to Crist, Republican state committeeman Bill Bunting of Pasco County called Bilirakis a “true statesman” with Washington experience.

“He would serve the people of Florida with respect and dignity,” Bunting wrote.

Joining Bunting in the Bilirakis recommendation are: Pasco Republican Chairman Randy Maggard; Republican State Committeewoman Lona O'Reilly;Hillsborough Republican Chairwoman Deborah Cox-Roush; State Committeewoman Tina Pike; State Committeeman A. J. Matthews; Pinellas Republican Chairman J. J. Beyrouti; State Committeewoman Nancy Riley and State Committeeman Tony DiMatteo.

Bunting said he had not spoken with Bilirakis about the recommendation.
