Miller picks aunt of election rival to help run commission office
Hillsborough County Commissioner-elect Les Miller has made an interesting pick for one of his two aides when he takes office in a couple of weeks.
Miller confirmed Friday that he will hire Bernadine White-King, the aunt of Kevin White, the incumbent Miller knocked out in the August Democratic primary. White and his aunt don't get along and once competed against each other in a 2003 Tampa City Council race, a nasty affair that the nephew won.
White-King was a long-time manager in the county's health and social services department before she was laid off about two years ago due to budget cutbacks. She went to work afterward for the U.S. Census.
Miller said he has known White-King since they were in high school, and that a mix of her experience in the county and his trust in her prompted him to offer the job. White, the exiting commissioner, expressed regret during a send-off ceremony Thursday that Miller was not retaining either of his aides.
"I’ve known her all my life and found her to be a very hard working person," Miller said. "I couldn’t think of a better person."
