Morroni misses his first meeting as Pinellas County Commission chairman
CLEARWATER -- John Morroni missed his first official meeting Tuesday as chairman of the Pinellas County Commission.
Ken Welch is running the meeting in his absence and said Morroni was undergoing treatment for his cancer.
"On the days he is undergoing those treatments, he will not be at meetings," Welch said. "He is certainly in our prayers ... we look forward to his return."
Morroni, who was treated for non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 2008, recently found out his cancer had returned.
A former Republican state representative, Morroni, 56, was first elected to the commission in 2000 and was recently named commission chairman for 2012.
Morroni said he plans to work during his treatment as he did in 2008. He missed only one meeting while going through six months of chemotherapy and five weeks of radiation.
