Nehr vs McKone: the postcard war
EAST LAKE -- Democrat Tom McKone and state Rep. Peter Nehr squared off Monday night at an election forum -- sort of.
In the Florida House District 48 race, Nehr, R-Tarpon Springs, and McKone, an East Lake Fire commissioner, seemed to agree on the essentials. They opposed Senate Bill 6, the bill that tied pay to student performance. They said the economy is the top issue. They say redistricting is flawed.
In seeking to distinguish himself from Nehr, McKone suggested he'd push harder for a bill allowing voters to decide whether north Pinellas communities incorporate. McKone said he'd lead a postcard campaign from residents demanding the bill get a full vote by the Legislature. The bill, authored by Nehr, hasn't made it that far.
"Things aren't that easy in Tallahassee, by dumping postcards on somebody's table," Nehr responded, suggesting measures often take years to be passed.
About 125 people attended the forum by the Council of North County Neighborhoods.
