Newark mayor to address Hillsborough Democrats Kennedy King dinner
Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker, fresh off a rousing address of the Democratic National Convention Tuesday, will be the keynote speaker for the Hillsborough County Democratic Party's Kennedy King Dinner later this month.
Booker, considered a rising star in Democratic circles in part for his efforts to lower crime in a city synonymous with blight as well as for his public speaking chops, is a bit of a coup for the local party chapter. The dinner is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Tampa Convention Center.
"We are thrilled to welcome Mayor Cory Booker to Hillsborough County for our Kennedy King Dinner," said Hillsborough County Democratic Party Chairman Chris Mitchell in a statement. "Like the men for whom the event is named -- President John Kennedy and (the Rev.) Martin Luther King Jr. -- he has shown great leadership in dealing with tough problems when others saw things as unchangeable. Mayor Cory Booker is a leader in our Party, mixing a pragmatic, 'get it done' approach with energy and a unique connection with voters."
